Chapter 1
10.13-7-4643
Earth Sector
System 180,9
Engage warp engines.
Stars flew by as the warp engines aboard the I.S.S. Jumpstart roared to life. Sitting at the helm with a grin on his face was Captain Ethheral. Although he never said anything, everyone on the bridge knew why he was smiling: they were going to make a fortune. Their mining in the 180,9 system had been better than anyone had expected. All that was needed now was a quick run back to Starport, and they would be ready for a new Challenger with all the trimmings.
Ethheral took a brief second out of his gloating to glance at his navigator, Commander Rolan, and say, Let me know when we reach the downspin boarder of Thrynn space.
Rolan looked back at Ethheral with a puzzled look and said, Why exactly are we going outward to the edge of Thrynn space and then going upspin to the flux at 128,24, when we could just go in an outward and upspin direction straight there that would be more efficient?
Simple, Ethheral replied, Because I want to avoid as much travel in Thrynn space as possible.
But arent they our allies?
Yes, but Im an Elowan, and, in case you forgot, they do not like Elowans. Even though they wouldnt attack us, I dont feel like ticking them off today. Especially in a ship this weak.
Understood, sir, Rolan acknowledged.
Good.
Ethheral glanced at his personnel communication relay. Might as well do a quick check on the rest of the ship while we wait, he thought. He activated his relay and said, Bridge to Engineering.
Engineering here, came the reply.
Lieutenant Potox, how is engineering?
Everything fine here, Captain. Medical called in with a malfunctioning data screen. I sent one of my staff members on it. Other than that, the ships holding together rather well. Not bad for a Wyltakin.
Captain, Rolan interrupted, we have picked up signs of a ship heading quickly in this direction.
Evasive maneuvers, Ethheral said uneasily.
Too late, Rolan groaned.
The communications gird rang as the ship dropped out of hyperspace. However, everyones attention was focused on the view screen.
So much for that plan, said Ethheral.
Staring at the Jumpstart out the view screen was a Thrynn Sssyrrll class battlecruiser, the largest and arguably most powerful ship in the New Empire. Its 762 meters long, 315 meters wide, and 290 meters high body dwarfed the tiny Interstel transport ship, and just the very presence of it brought chills down the spines of the Jumpstarts crew.
Lieutenant Commander Johnson looked at the Captain from the science grid with a slightly worried look and said, Were being scanned.
Captainn, were being hailed, said Lieutenant Thrrry of communications.
Open a channel, ordered Ethheral.
Captainn, theyre ssaying that they detect Elowanss on board.
Well, I guess that means that Thrynn scanners work better than we thought. I guess I owe you 5 S.P, Thrrry, joked Ethheral. The joke lightened the mood slightly, but everyone could tell the Captain was nervous.
Ethheral took a second to compose himself, and said, Onscreen.
The Thrynn Captain of the battlecruiser filled the view screen. Although he hadnt said anything, his irritation conveyed well.
Ethheral tried not to look weak and said, Greetings, Captain. Is there a problem here?
Yes, Elowan, there is, barked the Thrynn Captain, Youre traveling in our space.
Captain, if Im not mistaken, Thrynn space is about 30 grid units from here, Ethheral said cautiously.
I didnt say anything about Thrynn space, the Thrynn said with a cold glare, I said youre in our space, and unfortunately for you, Im not nearly as forgiving as most Thrynn. Godspeed, Captain.
The Thrynn gave Ethheral one last evil grin and terminated communications. The crew had only a second to think, to pray, or to see their life before the ship rang with warning buzzers.
Rolan looked up from his counsel with a blank look and uttered, Incoming miss
The whole ship shook violently as a class 5 missile ripped through the puny class 1 shields and completely destroyed the bridge. Sirens rang throughout the ship as the emergency doors scrambled to seal off the atmospheric leak.
The remaining crew were barely able to start running to the EEVs before massive quantities of heavy laser fire started to rip through the ship. Everything, from the ships only three EEVs, to the two class 1 missile launchers were targeted. Oxygen levels in the ship dropped rapidly as large, gaping holes formed in the ships hull.
In sickbay, two individuals, an Elowan doctor and a Human engineering staff member were jolted strongly as laser fire tore through the walls of the office. The Human, gripping on to a supply cabinet, watched in horror as the Elowan was sucked out the hole into the void of space.
The Humans ears started to ring as atmospheric pressure within the room dropped quickly. Gasping for air, he desperately pulled himself into a nearby Cryotank and activated it.
The ship continued to shake violently as the doors to the tank closed. The Human could feel the oxygen level in the tank return to normal as the restraining straps secured his legs, arms, waist, and neck. He could hear the tanks emergency battery hum to life as the power went out all over the ship. The sound of laser fire started to fade as cryogenic gases filled the tank. Looking wearily out of one of the holes in the hull, the Human saw a Thrynn battlecruiser come along side of the ship with lasers blazing. Then, as he entered full stasis, his world went dark.
Outside the ship, the Thrynn battlecruiser continued its barrage on what was left of the tiny Wyltakin. Finally, the weak ship, having experienced so much stress on the hull, broke apart. Having completed its objective, the battlecruiser turned around and headed back to Thrynn space. As its class 5 equivalent engines burned to life, the debris of the I.S.S Jumpstart drifted off into space.
