It was a simple job, really. Being a janitor usually was. But things got a little more interesting when some cleanup required a decompression suit. Well, he hadnt gone through years of higher education for nothing.
Ralph OMalley didnt really mind all that much. There were definite tradeoffs to being second-lowest technical/sanitary worker on board the Interstel docking bay above Arth. First off, he got to know things he never really needed to, like laser dilation ratios and how to tell hydrogen from nitrogen in atmospheres. Everyone with a birth there had to clear background checks for, had to know some of, and consequently got access to certain technical information. Such things as Ralphs concentrated laser-wash tools and decontamination information granted him those privileges. Other things, such as how to make an Elowan turn slightly purple, he got from the often-visiting crews of different ships.
But it was a simple job, Ralph mused as he spent his fourth hour sweeping the outside portholes with the laser broom, which was starting to get to him. So what if he knew how to make the darn thing burn away any debris while being absorbed into the glass without so much as a millimeter of loss in terms of thickness? He was tethered to a damn window, the umpteenth today, and clumsily moving a stick back and forth while being gawked at by tourists four windows down. Well, theres a price to everything.
The Veloxi furnished most of this particular janitorial staff due to their technical prowess. The only problem was that with their pointy appendages, Interstel found it cheaper to hire a few humans to do some of the touchier outer shell jobs. They didnt have to keep buying the more-evolved suits for their insect brethren (which had to be replaced often due to constant pressure on the outer joints), and humans were the next most adept species on the list. But hey, it gave him a great place to stay, free food, and a few bucks with an easy shot to the local bar (it was about a 2 minute walk from his living quarters). Plus, chicks dig space men. Especially the Thrynnian women, but Ralph had heard some nasty things about what that tail could do when they got excited from a coworker on disability leave. That whole inter-species thing was kinda farfetched anyway. Not something he really wanted to partake in.
Ralph chuckled quietly to himself. He mulled over just how much time he had on his hands out here as he hopped back towards the personnel airlock. Tomorrow would be a bit better: hed be sweeping out docking births. And then theres the next day recalibration on the electro-gravitational support in the interim docking area. He only did that four or five times a year, and it guaranteed Ralph a few less hours of personal time on every occurrence. That job he did solely for the opportunity of advancement. A promotion for a janitor? Yeah right.
